Tips for New Year in Helsinki

Locals and visitors will once again ring in the New Year in Helsinki with festivities. The official New Year’s Eve celebrations will take place this year at Kansalaistori square. These tips are for 2023-2024 festivities.

This year, the turn of the year will once again be celebrated together at a free grand event on Kansalaistori Square. The festival-goers will be entertained by top Finnish artists Bess, Vilma Alina and Käärijä. There is programme for all ages, and the night ends with fireworks.

The New Year’s Eve celebrations kick off at 5:30 p.m. with Skidit-disko, a children’s disco that makes the entire family dance, featuring the music of DJ Orkidea, dancing characters, games etc. The early evening programme climaxes with a children’s fireworks show at 6 p.m. The late-night concert’s warm-ups begin with DJ Xmies and hip-hop trio Lyömättömät at 10 p.m.

Lux Korkeasaari

The Lux Helsinki light art festival has an early start at Korkeasaari Zoo. Korkeasaari is illuminated with especially warm and atmospheric way in honor of the light art festival and darkest time of the year. In addition to festive lighting Lux Korkeasaari presents light installations at Helsinki Zoo for the cost of a normal ticket. For each ticket purchased during the event, one euro will be donated towards protecting snow leopards. Korkeasaari is open on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day from 10am to 7pm.

Public transport

On New Year’s Eve, 31 December, a Saturday service will operate. The metro and commuter trains to Helsinki Airport will operate about two hours longer than usual. There will also be extra night bus services.

Public transport will be affected by New Year’s Eve celebrations held at the Kansalaistori Square. Buses that normally leave from Elielinaukio will exceptionally leave from the Kamppi Terminal. Trams 1T, 4 and 10 will run via Fredrikinkatu, Urho Kekkosen katu and Simonkatu from about 9.45pm. 

On New Year’s Day, 1 January, a Sunday service will operate.

Helsinki Tourist Information

Helsinki Tourist Information at Aleksanterinkatu 24 is open on New Year’s Eve from 10am to 4pm and online services from 9am-4pm. Tourist Info services are closed on New Year's day 1.1. 2024.
