The legendary Stockmann’s department store means much more to locals than just a shopping paradise; it is part of our shared memory. It is the stories our grandparents tell about elevator girls and the memories of younger generations of the fish in the aquarium on the sixth floor – something we had to go and see every time we went to Stockmann’s.

The Aleksanterinkatu entrance to Stockmann’s department store is the number one place in Helsinki to meet up with friends. Under the clock is where locals shake hands, hug and kiss each other on the cheek. After greeting each other in the appropriate fashion they either move on or step into Stockmann’s, which has become home to an increasing number of cool cafés in recent years.

Situated at the intersection of the busiest avenues in the city centre, Stockmann’s department store opened its doors at its current address in 1930. Over the decades the massive building designed by Sigurd Frosterus has been renovated and expanded in all directions – up, down and sideways.

In recent years Stockmann’s has taken in an increasing number of brand-name tenants, but the building is still ahead of its time. In this age of online shopping, the splendid shoe and bag department serves as a reminder of how important it is to see, feel and try on leather goods before purchasing. The Herkku delicatessen also prides itself on premium quality and personal service. The shop boys who carry the bags of older customers to their waiting taxis exemplify why Stockmann’s is a true icon.
