Helsinki has enjoyed a boom in Vietnamese restaurants in recent years that has brought to our city an excellent selection of places serving authentic flavours. Timo Santala loves Vietnamese cuisine and lists his favourites here!

The Saigonese

Anyone who knows Vietnamese cuisine knows that the soul of pho soup is its spicy broth stewed in bones. The Phở at this intimate and cosy café-restaurant run by a couple of cousins is prepared in South Vietnamese style, and its broth is so perfect that you have to savour every last drop!

The Saigonese also serves Vietnamese summer roles and bao steam buns, as well as the lunch of the day, and everything is available as a vegan option too. Its vegan pho is made from vegetables, root vegetables, fruits and spices and is an unbelievably tasty umami bomb that is served with various soy strips, tofu and mushrooms.

Special mention goes to the addictive chili oil flavoured with lemongrass and garlic, as well as the friendly service!

Pho Viet

Behind the large glass windows on the corner of Eerikinkatu and Yrjönkatu you will find Pho Viet, which serves carefully prepared northern style Vietnamese pho that is tasty and has pleasantly thin-sliced onions. The soups are also generously sized, and you can also order beef flank or knuckle on the side.

The menu also includes a large selection of Vietnamese rice and noodle dishes that you can enjoy with the excellent homemade chili oil and delicious pickled onions and garlic that are served with each meal.

Mekong

Mekong in Kamppi is a cosy Vietnamese restaurant that specialises in dishes from the Mekong Delta. It is often full of Vietnamese customers, which is a good sign, and the flavours are authentic.

Instead of Phở, which comes from the Hanoi region, the comfort food of southwestern Vietnam is Hủ tiếu, or rice noodles served with pork, pork heart, pork liver, quail eggs or tiger prawns. As with all Vietnamese cuisine, fresh herbs are used in abundance, and all local specialities are also available as a vegan option with a broth made of celery root and swede.

For dessert, you can enjoy creamy coconut ice cream topped with mango, coconut flakes and roasted peanuts.

Vibami

Vibami serves Vietnamese cuisine, such as Phở made from broth that has been stewed for 12 hours and fresh spring rolls, in southern Vietnamese style. The Bún thịt nướng rice noodle salad served with lemongrass chicken, pork or shrimp and fresh herbs in particular proves that Vibami is one of the most authentic Vietnamese restaurants in town. Vegan options are available for just about everything, and the reasonably priced wine list invites you to enjoy a nice long dinner.

Fly Fusion

Fly Fusion is a tiny and uniquely stylish café on Luotsikatu in the Katajanokka district that is filled with plants and emphasises aesthetics and atmosphere. You can order phở for lunch, but the summer rolls stuffed with strawberries, kiwis and even radishes definitely steal the show. The cakes and pastries may be inspired more by Japan, but you’ll be more than happy to enjoy them with some quality Vietnamese coffee.

Be My Guest

Be My Guest was opened by six friends in the Jätkäsaari district and serves fresh and healthy Vietnamese classics, from summer rolls to excellent Phở soup. The restaurant’s speciality is its bánh mì freshly baked bread, the crispy crust of which was developed together with a bakery from Lahti. In the evening, Be My Guest offers a laid-back atmosphere and Vietnamese tapas – delicious snacks that go perfectly with drinks. The goi noodle salad is definitely worth ordering to the table.
