What could be more wonderful than to curl up under a blanket to enjoy a hot drink by the fireplace and watch the flickering flames on a rainy evening or on a frosty day. Human nature draws us to fires, and sitting by an open fireplace and staring into the hypnotically dancing flames can be wonderfully relaxing. There’s nothing like sitting by a warm fireplace, especially when it’s stormy or frosty outside. Fireplaces are surprisingly hard to come by in Helsinki however, and spot-on tips for lovers of open fires come in handy – so keep reading.

Restaurant PLATS on Hanaholmen island brings even more warmth to a milieu of Nordic wood architecture. Found right by the sea, the restaurant housed in the Finnish-Swedish cultural centre is cosy and high quality with a menu of clean northern flavours. The design sauna Löyly is especially known for its architecture and its adjoint restaurant offers a beautiful location to enjoy salmon soup, with a modern glass fireplace providing a warm contrast to the panoramic views to the sea. Hotel Rantapuisto in eastern Helsinki’s Ramsinniemi has a large and cosy brick fireplace, and the lobby area at the Scandic Grand Central Helsinki hotel also has a fireplace to lounge around. Bar Haven invites visitors to take a seat around a gas fireplace.

When the weather is sunny, you can also grill sausages over an outdoor fire outside the atmospheric Cafe Regatta in Töölö.
