Swimming with the kids

On a warm summer's day, sun glaring off the sea, a small group of people wade out into the water from the beach at Kasinonpuisto. The Servinniemi shoreline can be seen in the distance.

On a hot summer’s day, Helsinki has no lack of places where you can cool off. Child-friendly swimming places can be found all along the shorelines and at popular open-air swimming pools. Many of the city’s playparks also have paddling pools that can be enjoyed during opening hours when the sun is shining!

Water in public beaches is usually clean and warm, but please note that the algae situation might vary in different areas. The City of Helsinki supervises the beaches during the swimming season and takes samples of the beach water in accordance with the sampling plan.

Kallahdenniemi swimming beach

The Kallahdenniemi swimming beach at the tip of the peninsula in Vuosaari is the number one spot in Helsinki for sand dunes. The shallow water and surrounding nature make this beach perfect for a day out with the kids. The water is also often much warmer than at other beaches. You can wade out for many metres, but the water can get deep very quickly after the sandy section, so keep an eye on your kids. The beach also has a playground, a summer kiosk and a public grilling area – just bring your own charcoal!

Kivinokka swimming beach

Between Herttoniemi and Kulosaari you will find idyllic allotment gardens and the Kivinokka swimming beach, which is perfect for a spending a summer’s day with the kids. The shallow and sheltered beach is particularly popular among families, and everyone is free to use the public beach toys. Near the beach is the RantaKiska summer kiosk. A nature trail with birdwatching towers circles the Kivinokka peninsula, offering plenty of shaded areas on hot days and a fun hiking route for the whole family!

Lauttasaari swimming beach

The atmosphere by the casino shoreline (Kasinonranta) on the island of Lauttasaari is like being on holiday in the South. There is a long sandy beach, a waterfront café, shallow waters for paddling in, and sailing boats drifting by on the horizon. There is a big climbing ship and swings on the beach, so the kids have plenty to keep themselves occupied. The beach is surrounded by green lawns, which are also popular among the geese (unfortunately). The beach is located just a few hundred metres from the Lauttasaari metro station (Gyldenintie exit).

Uunisaari swimming beach

Close to the city centre is a special swimming spot that stands apart from all the others, as you have to take a small ferry from the Kaivopuisto shoreline to get there. The swimming beach on the island of Uunisaari has a small playground, lifeguards, changing facilities and public toilets. There is also a café-restaurant where you can buy snacks and ice creams. From the beach you can watch all the boats passing by, while the rocks on the far side of the island afford a beautiful view to the open sea. The swimming beach and island are free of charge, but you need tickets for the short boat ride. The operator is happy to lend a hand if you need help with your stroller!

Mustikkamaa swimming beach

Mustikkamaa swimming beach is now that much closer to the city centre, thanks to the modern Isoisänsilta pedestrian bridge. The long swimming beach near the bridge to Helsinki Zoo is a quiet place for enjoying a dip with the kids, and Mustikkamaa itself is a fun island for exploring. At the Edible Park you can pet the rabbits and help water the public gardens. At the entrance to the zoo you will find a small café, and at the other end of the Isoisänsilta pedestrian bridge there are plenty of fun restaurants in the Kalasatama district.

Aurinkolahti swimming beach

The shoreline boulevard and long swimming beach at Aurinkolahti are perfect on a hot summer’s day. Along the boulevard you will find a playground, cafés, an ice cream kiosk and restaurants, as well as shops nearby. The swimming beach is ideal for kids, but be careful, because the water can get deep suddenly in places.

Porvariskuninkaanpuisto swimming beach

The Porvariskuninkaanpuisto swimming beach in the Jollas district offers beautiful views to Villinki and other nearby islands. In addition to the archipelago views, what makes this beach special is that you can watch the massive ships sail by, plus there’s a long pier where you can sit and enjoy a picnic. The small swimming beach is very popular among families. It is also within walking distance of the Matosaari island and the café and restaurant at Jollas89.

Kumpula outdoor swimming pool

The outdoor swimming pool at Kumpula was originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics. It is extremely popular among locals, and it has a paddling pool for kids, plenty of lawns and a small playground. The paddling pool can be found in the lawn area, far from the deep pools and next to the playground. There is an admission fee for the area.
