This is where we always stroll and snoop around. In winter, sniffing the piles of snow, and in summer, sitting around the rocks by the water and wondering at the sunsets, the ducks in the reeds, life in general, and being a dog. The area is full of scents. Over there I can smell the herbs, berries, and the grannies growing them. Fresh bread is baking at the Venetsia House in the former hospital area. In the springtime, the bulbs wake up and the air is filled with the smell of freshly cut lawns. Sitting on the rocks on a summer night, the smell of smoke gently cuts through the wind as people gather around fires, celebrating their youth.

Lapinlahti is a district with much parkland in the western downtown area. The seaside district is inhabited by fewer than 30 residents and fewer than 100 people work here. A major part of the area is taken up by the cemetery and the compounds of a former hospital.

The Lapinlahti Hospital was the first clinical building solely built for psychiatric care in Finland. It is also one of the oldest mental health institutions in all of Europe. It was completed in 1841 following the plans of architect C.L. Engel. The hospital has since closed and the spaces are now used as workspaces and cultural activities. There is a café and art gallery and events are also held here. The former hospital's sauna is generally considered the oldest public sauna still in use in Helsinki.

The Hietaniemi Cemetery is situated by Lapinlahti on its northern side. Many notable Finns from presidents to artists are buried there. There are also Orthodox, Islamic, and Jewish cemeteries besides the large Lutheran cemetery.
