If you arrive in Helsinki at the start of the week, you might be surprised to find that many museums are closed. Not to worry, as there is still plenty to do in the Finnish capital on Mondays. Have you tried swimming outdoors by the Market Square at Allas Sea Pool, visited our spectacular new central library Oodi or been to the Amos Rex art museum? Oodi is a world-class library and architectural attraction that is like a modern-day Noah’s Ark that houses not only thousands of books, but also an urban workshop, cafés and the Kino Regina cinema. In summertime, you can also enjoy the view from the scenic balcony!
Helsinki City Museum is the only museum in the world with the theme of Helsinki. At the center are the personal experiences of the townspeople and the ordinary everyday life reflected in the museum’s objects and photographs. Amos Rex is an urban art mecca whose subterranean galleries are much admired and talked about. The art museum is housed in the iconic Lasipalatsi “Glass Palace”, where you will also find several cafés, restaurants and shops. Outside in the square you can take a seat on one of the terraces and soak up the sun while enjoying snacks and refreshments.
You can also explore Helsinki’s market halls and discover local delicacies – maybe even buy some to take home with you! For animal lovers, we recommend visiting Helsinki Zoo or Sea Life Helsinki. And, of course, you can always visit our beautiful churches to admire the altarpieces or simply to take a moment and meditate.
