Punavuori

Punavuori is definitely one of our favorite neighborhoods in Helsinki.  The vibe is really good as there’s a nice mix of people from every profession.  It’s nice to see the same familiar faces daily. There’s a great sense of community here and everyone loves to support  their local! Punavuori is the most similar to our neighborhood in Brooklyn, with its cool little shops, great cafes and places to eat and the atmosphere in general is relaxed but still unique. The best is when summer hits and everyone is out and about, that’s when this neighborhood really shines.

Punavuori is a district in the southwestern part of downtown Helsinki. It is known for its neighbourhood shops, community atmosphere, and lively feeling. The area is Helsinki's most densely inhabited district and especially popular amongst young adults and families with small children.

The name Punavuori ('Red Mountain') refers to the red-hued rocks found in the area. The name was established in the 17th century. As often is the case with old Helsinki slang, Swedish equivalents were translated back into Finnish with a twist – hence the nickname Rööperi, derived from the Swedish Rödberget. The first residential suburb of the capital city first housed primarily workers, fishers, sailors, and disadvantaged students.

Today some 9,200 residents call Punavuori home. The streetscape is diverse: old industrial buildings turned into offices and apartments and with art nouveau stone castles, neo-Renaissance houses, and functionalist building blocks all cohabiting in harmony. The district has also retained some of its old wooden housing blocks.

For many, the attraction of Punavuori is the abundance of design and fashion boutiques, restaurants and bars. A great number of the Design District shops are to be found here.

A landmark in the area is the 500-metre-long Iso Roobertinkatu pedestrian street, colloquially known as Roba. Popular sights include the Mikael Agricola Church designed by famed architect Lars Sonck, the former dock area Telakkaranta, one of the most popular parks in the city, Sinebrychoff Park, as well as the Sinebrychoff Art Museum – both carry the name of the local beer brewing dynasty.
