Helsinki is surrounded by nature

It’s somehow surreal to be in these Nordic lands with such a rigid weather, but I’m actually loving it. Out of this world, surrounded by nature and respect for the environment. Nordic people know how to enjoy life.

Italian Federica di Nardo & Matteo Foresti visited Helsinki in winter, and published several photos as a result of it on Federica's popular Instagram account federicadinardo_

Here follows a short summary of those photos with 5 tips out of their recommendations in Helsinki:

1. University of Helsinki - Main Library: Kaisa House: Beautiful perspectives and incredible designs are Helsinki's key words! This is a wide & cool space. I love this modern concept, when you enter the building it looks awesome. The level of education in Finland is one of the highest in the world, studying in such a gorgeous environment really helps the mind to focus, and you creativity is stimulated.

2. Särkkä Island: Ice? Nice! The aerial view of the dock of Särkkä Island is a must! The temperature when we visited was -8 and the sea was beautifully frozen.

3. Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma: This museum only hosts modern art exhibitions, with a 6 months rotation between one and the next. Maybe for its central position and  for such a modern building, Kiasma is one of the most known in the Finnish capital. Open to the public in 1998, the choice to realize such a modern building in front of the equestrian statue of Mannerheim marshal was immediately criticized by one part of the people (project by the american architect Steven Holl). You can’t miss it because of the awesomeness of his minimal spaces, making it look a surreal place.

4. Winter Garden: Imagine a wonderful greenhouse where you can sit and read a book, bring your own lunch and eat, have a coffee with friends or take a thousand pictures! This is the Helsinki Winter Garden, where dreams come true! So overwhelming to admire this incredible place!

5. Natural History MuseumClosed to the public for several years for renovation, it has been reopened in a totally new look. Inside you can find botany, zoology, geology and paleontology sections, even used for research purposes by the Helsinki University. The big moose in front of the Museum is its most known symbol. It’s free on Thursday from 16 to 18. For a complete overview you also can visit the Botanical Garden of Kaisaniemi, on Unioninkatu 44. Also, the beautiful staircase allow you to make great pictures!
