Sanna Saastamoinen-Barrois: Sacred Carpets
Sanna Saastamoinen-Barrois: Sacred Carpets, painting installation

"In Paris in 2003, as the new mother of a six-month-old girl, I wrote for my philosophy studies an essay "The Potential of Poetic Language as an Interpretation of Reality” on philosophy, reality, and language. I wrote about the possibility of poetic language to pass beyond the limit of Wittgenstein's world, beyond the limit of words. To be a wordless bridge to express what cannot be expressed in words.

Also in 2003, I started rolling my canvases. I was working from home as before, but now in addition to being an artist working fom home , I had become a young mother taking care of her child in home, -thus my works and working processes could no longer pervade the whole space. I documented the time, I wanted everything to be meaningful, -and free, i did not have the economic opportunity to buy canvases I painted on bed linen, tablecloths, construction fabrics found in the streets, our cardboard waste. I sew cardboards, fabrics, different materials together.

Sometimes I would open an unfinished work and continue for a while. Often I would also start a new one, which I then rolled up to wait for the moment when I could continue. After seventeen years in Paris, as a mother of three daughters I rolled open my carpets in Finland. And I nailed some works on the exterior walls for weather and time to participate in the process.

Today I sew them on stronger supports, build structures, hammer, handstitch, sculpt and assemble. And I always only use recycled material. I have started to make my own paintings with self made botanical pigments and I also do botanical dye on fabrics that I handstitch into collages. Working with the material is a reflection, where process leads the dialogue.

My Sacred Carpets carry with them stories of twenty years and emotions, thoughts that couldn't really be expressed otherwise."
