The most highly anticipated food event of the autumn, the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market, is here again with traditional sailing ships, cheerful accordion music, a genuine maritime atmosphere and seafood treats that you can enjoy on the spot or take home with you! The market will be held 2–8 October in Helsinki Market Square.

The Herring Market is the oldest traditional event in Helsinki, dating all the way back to 1743. This year there will be 26 fish vendors selling their goods directly from their fishing boats or from market stalls. The traditional selection includes salt herring and a huge range of marinated herring, from rowanberry to red pepper varieties, not to mention all the other tasty market food.

Besides fishing boats, four traditional sailing boats – Albanus, Olga, Vivan and Valborg – will also drop anchor at the Market Square for the duration of the event.

Mayor Juhana Vartiainen will open the Helsinki Baltic Herring Market from the deck of the sailing boat Vivan at 10 am on Sunday, 2 October, and the traditional charity boat race ‘Herring Row’ will finish at the Lyypekinlaituri pier with music from the Helsinki Finnish Club brass band at midday.

A panel of judges comprising food industry professionals and sworn Baltic herring aficionados will again convene on the opening day of the market to pick the best products in two categories: Baltic Herring Surprise of the Year and Pickled Fish of the Year. The winners will be announced from the deck of the sailing boat Vivan at 4 pm on Sunday, 2 October.
