From sock factories to saunas, Helsinki is a city with an offering like none other we’ve seen. There was so much to experience! After initially being overwhelmed by the options available, we agreed on a target of visiting 2 recommended options per day, and leaving the rest of the time open to whatever it was we would stumble upon.

British Deborah Widdick & Helena Murphy visited Helsinki in autumn and made several posts as a result of it on Deborah's popular Instagram account globelletravels.

Here follows a short summary with 5 tips out of their recommendations in Helsinki:

1) Be amazed by the autumnal shades of Vanhankaupunginlahti Bay, the founding place of Helsinki city, Old Church Park (Vanha Kirkkopuisto) and Nuuksio National Park. The vividness of autumn and its yellows, oranges & reds that met us throughout the trip were truly stunning.

2) Take high tea in the owner of Helsinki Woollen Sock Factory’s office, where we communicated our enthusiasm despite a language barrier about the fine selection of grand antiques, before discovering the brilliant creations being made there using traditional methods.

3) Discover just how passionate the Finns are about their coffee, and Moomins. Read more about the coffee culture here, and about Moomins here.

4) Explore the brilliant Amos Rex, as well as the photography display on show at the Cable Factory's Finnish Museum of Photography, both showcasing the brilliance of Finnish art & architecture.

5) Eat your way through a variety of fine cuisine at Olo, Sushi Bar and Wine, Yes Yes Yes, Story and Ekberg to name just a few. If you’re a foodie – this city has got you covered.
