Helsinki is bursting with delightful bakeries where you can sit down, relax and enjoy freshly baked ryebread, sourdough, rice pies, pastries and cakes. Most bakeries also cater to special dietary needs. Here are some local favourites for you to try!

Levain

Levain is a bakery and eatery that serves in Punavuori and Töölö districts. As its name suggests, it specialises in levain (sourdough) bread that it bakes all day long on the premises in its own stone sole oven, so you can pick up a fresh loaf at any time throughout the day. In addition to its delicious bread, Levain is rumoured to serve the best Portuguese pastel de nata tarts in town. You can even eat breakfast while enjoying the cosy and quiet atmosphere!

You can stay and enjoy a coffee or take a bag of treats home with you!

Leipomo Väyrynen

The Väyrynen bakery opened in 2013, but its roots stretch back all the way to 1908. Located at the culinary and urban culture centre Teurastamo, Väyrynen bakes unusual breads and pastries, including potato flatbread, seed bread, mini donuts and Runeberg tarts. Everything is hand-baked using organic flours and no additives. Väyrynen doesn’t have its own bread shop; instead, you can purchase its products from the fish shop at Teurastamo, which is right next door. Its products are also sold at select shops across Helsinki. Make sure you get there early before the shelves are empty!

Eromanga

Eromanga by the Kasarmitori square serves oven-fresh baked goods and coffee in a traditional café setting. Everything is baked by hand and sold fresh daily. Eromanga is famous for its tasty meat pies, which have been baked using the same secret recipe since 1946. The shop and café on Pohjoinen Makasiinikatu is authentic, and the shelves hold not only meat pies but also ryebreads and cinnamon buns. The bakery is open on weekdays from 6:30 in the morning!
