Are ethical choices only the prerogative of the elite? Answers are sought without a hint of black humor. Satirical works that criticize the impact of the power of money on human morality and its consequences for the planet are perfect for this time filled with crises, just as they were already being completed in the turbulent Weimar Republic of Germany in the 1920s and 1930s.

Weill composed the play Little Mahagonny for Brecht's lyrics for the 1927 Baden-Baden Music Festival. In the interpretation, the morally corrupted party is returning from the climate summit and has been surprisingly left at the mercy of nature. The group faces the consequences of their own helplessness and lifestyle.

Seven death sins were premiered after Weill had already left for exile in Germany in the wake of the rise of National Socialism in Germany in 1933. In the opera, two sisters leave their homeland in Louisiana to earn building money for their unreceived brothers and parents. On their seven-year journey across America, the siblings face seven deadly sins.

Works depicting the world and humanity critically, but also with unbridled and heartfelt humor, highlight human weaknesses such as greed, jealousy, pride, laziness and anger. Can everybody afford to make choices on moral grounds, or is it the case that only the wealthy have the opportunity to live ethically?
