The Herring Market is the oldest traditional event in Helsinki, dating all the way back to 1743. This year there will be 30 fish vendors selling their goods directly from their fishing boats or from market stalls. The traditional selection includes salt herring and a huge range of marinated herring, from rowanberry to red pepper varieties, not to mention all the other tasty market food. In addition to seafood treats, you can also buy delicious black archipelago bread, as well as lambswool fashion and other handicrafts.
The traditional sailing ships Albanus, Vivan, Olga, Joanna Saturna and Valborg will be at the market all week long serving fish soups and other seasonal treats. Alongside the fishermen, many other local and organic food vendors will also be selling their goods from the market stalls.
The Mayor of Helsinki, Juhana Vartiainen, will open the Baltic Herring Market on the deck of Vivan on Sunday, October 3rd. The judges' panel, consisting of food professionals and herring connoisseurs, will meet on the opening Sunday to select the best products in two categories: Herring Surprise of the Year and Seasoned Fish of the Year. Winners will be announced on Sunday afternoon. Herring delicacies and other seafood can also be tasted during the market, for example in the Market Hall and Torikortteli restaurants.
