We all face moments of vulnerability. They’re part of life. In Helsinki, we are committed to helping you get through your moments of weakness. Our universal health care system and other support structures are designed to catch you when you fall so that you can soon stand up again. We care, and we believe in you.

Alexei’s My Freedom Story is about trial and error in Helsinki. The Californian took the leap and moved to the Finnish capital after receiving an offer to join Rovio. He chose the job, and Helsinki, over a job in California that paid more than double the salary he was being offered in Finland. Why? Well, he wanted to experience Nordic society in action. And, more importantly, after interviewing with several companies in the USA that offered intense work cultures, it was clear that his future boss (and her boss), were something different. They listened to the ideas Alexei had to offer, rather than prescribing how he should work or challenging him to impress them.

"Helsinki was my destination after following a somewhat new career in gaming. It was a small leap considering I had grown up in far away, sunny California. Though it was more of a big step since I had lived away from home for a few years before (in Singapore and Hong Kong)."

Being fragile in Helsinki

“I had admired Nordic society from afa, especially the social safety net for the residents and the focus on investing in its people's futures through government-paid healthcare and education. I was also a little jealous of the cost of living here compared to the unrealistic and unsustainable cost of living in California.

From the very beginning at Rovio I felt I didn’t have to brag to be appreciated and that my voice would be heard. Their highly international work environment allows for patience and a general desire for understanding differences in culture and personality. I can stand up for what I believe in and communicate in my own way.  Not only that but the directness and authenticity of many Finns has made it clear to me that I don’t have to be all fake smiles and overt friendliness all the time. I can be myself and that’s OK. The honesty is refreshing.”
