Tervasaari

The tiny island of Tervasaari by the Kruununhaka district is a nice sunny picnic place both in the daytime and in the evening. Surrounded by the sea and connected to the mainland by a causeway, Tervasaari – or Tervis as the locals call it – has pleasant park-like lawns where you can relax late into the night as the evening sun shines over the iconic apartment buildings of Merihaka. Tervasaari has a lovely relaxing atmosphere on summer evenings, which you can continue to enjoy at one of the local bars or restaurants.

Lapinlahti

The sunny and pretty shoreline by the historic hospital grounds at Lapinlahti attract many locals to relax and even take a dip in the sea. Lapinlahden Lähde, the local organisation that maintains the grounds, runs a public sauna that can also be rented for private use in the evenings. The hospital grounds are worth visiting just to enjoy their unique beauty.

Kaapelitehdas

The Kaapelitehdas (Cable Factory) cultural centre in Ruoholahti is situated right by the sea. Although its concrete shoreline is not the most obvious place for a picnic, it offers a very level surface that is perfect for  enjoy the sun late into the evening. Your very own summer party!

Hietaranta beach

After a day of sunbathing on “Hietsu”, the most popular beach in Helsinki, you can spend the evening enjoying a picnic as you watch the sun slowly set over the sea. The water at Hietsu always seems to be warmer than other swimming beaches. The Helsingin jäätelötehdas ice cream kiosk stays open well into the evening, tempting you to try the massive servings of fresh local ice cream.

Pitkänsillanranta

The shoreline by the Pitkänsilta bridge in Kallio is an ideal place for an urban picnic. Alongside the Pitkänsillanranta road you will find a large wooden pier that is a perfect place for enjoying a summer’s evening. The nearby Säästöpankinranta shoreline is another popular hangout. The best thing is that you can buy all your picnic supplies, including fresh strawberries and peas, from the nearby Hakaniemi Market.

Suomenlinna

The fortress islands of Suomenlinna are full of idyllic picnic places, especially the green and quiet western shorelines where you can watch the romantic sunset. The public swimming beach at Suomenlinna is small but nicely sheltered and so picturesque that it makes for perfect Instagram shots. Before catching the ferry to Suomenlinna, fill up your picnic basket with supplies at the Market Square on the mainland.

Mustikkamaa

Another sweet picnic spot happens to be next to the Helsinki Zoo, Korkeasaari. This tiny island serves as a popular outdoor recreation area and can be easily reached via the bridge that connects the island to Kulosaari. The island offers amazing opportunities for hiking as well as idyllic spots to hunker down and enjoy the setting sun whilst munching on a picnic sandwich.
